A Walk a Month? by Mike Wharton

The Bridford trust has recently published a guide to walks around the Bridford Parish. It is a handy, pocket sized document and has proved to be very popular. Christow Stores has been selling copies and stocks are now low.

In my capacity as a DNP Voluntary Warden I have been asked if I would be willing to write a similar guide for our Parish. Sheila and I have taken this approach seriously and would like to respond to the challenge but publication is not cheap and there may be more cost effective ways of achieving the same result. Unless a Sponsor can be identified, who would be willing to bankroll the first print run?  Sheila and I, with support from Stafford Clark on Parish history matters and Richard Weaving on wild life, will write a guide to 12 walks which will be published at the rate of one a month in Christow News starting with this issue. The same copy will be transferred to the Christow News web site and kept there on a permanent basis so that walkers can assemble their own guide.

Each walk will start and finish at the Artichoke and be prefaced with a photograph of the best view. As the guide develops we will indicate links with Bridford walks and how to use them to achieve circular walks incorporating pit stops on the way. For future issues it will be interesting to receive details of reader’s favourite walks or variations on ours.

Just a few points before we start.

  1. The best map to use is the OS110 Torquay and Dawlish, available at the Post Office. The numbers we will use are those used by the National Park for identification.
  2. Please observe the Country Codes particularly shutting gates after you and keeping  dogs on leads.
  3. For most of the walks, particularly at this time of year, you will need wellies or better still well fitting walking boots, and a stick to push brambles and nettles out of the way.
  4.  As the monsoon season never ends these days keep a good waterproof in your rucksack.

The footpath overlay for the OS110 map can be downloaded >here< as a PDF or >here< as a Word document
